"We should hang out sometime" is not a plan

4 min readJune 2026

You know this exchange. Someone says it would be great to catch up. You agree completely. Neither of you names a day. Three months later you have the exact same exchange again, both of you equally sincere both times, and equally unlikely to follow through.

This isn't really about not caring. Most of the time everyone involved genuinely means it. The problem is that "sometime" isn't a real commitment, it's a placeholder for one, and placeholders are very easy to let quietly expire.

Real plans need two specific, slightly uncomfortable things: a day, and a first move. Someone has to name a Tuesday. Someone has to be the one who suggests it instead of waiting to be asked. Both of those are small asks that somehow feel much bigger in the moment, which is exactly why "sometime" keeps winning by default.

There's also a quieter reason vague plans survive so well: they let everyone feel connected without anyone having to risk being turned down. "We should hang out" costs nothing and confirms nothing. An actual invitation, with a real time attached, is a small bet that the other person will say yes. That tiny bit of risk is enough to stall a lot of good intentions indefinitely.

The fix isn't complicated, it's just unfamiliar. Name the day when the topic comes up, not later. Or skip the whole negotiation and just post what you're looking to do, coffee, a walk, whatever, and let someone who's actually free right now say yes. Either way, the difference between a real Tuesday and another "sometime" usually comes down to one specific sentence, said out loud, before the moment passes.
