5 signs it's time to close the laptop and go do something

4 min readMay 2026

None of these are red flags exactly. They're more like a pattern worth noticing before it becomes the whole shape of your week.

You've rewatched something you don't even really like. Not a comfort show you love, just something already open because deciding what to watch felt like too much. If you're re-consuming content purely because choosing something new takes energy you don't have, that's less about entertainment and more about avoidance.

Your last three "let's hang out soon" texts never turned into a plan. Everyone agreed it was a good idea. Nobody picked a day. This is one of the clearest signs that good intentions alone don't make things happen, they need an actual time and place attached to them.

You've described your weekend as "good, just relaxed" three weekends running. Rest is real and necessary. But if every weekend sounds the same because nothing happened in any of them, that's not rest anymore, that's just time passing quietly.

You know exactly what's happening in your group chats and almost nothing that's happening in your actual city. It's possible to be fully caught up on everyone's lives and still not have seen another person in days. Those aren't the same thing, even though they can feel similar from the couch.

Getting dressed to go somewhere feels like a bigger decision than it should. If putting on real pants and leaving the apartment has started to feel like a whole project, that's usually the clearest sign of all. The fix isn't complicated. It's just doing the thing, once, before the inertia sets back in.

None of this means anything is wrong with you. It just might mean it's time to pick one thing, this week, and actually do it with another person instead of near a screen.
